Description
Vintage British 1970's hand tied "Delfur Fancy" large fishing fly in bespoke shadowbox glazed frame. It was tied by F. J. G. Riley of Bow, London. He was the Head Engineer for Lesney Toys, makers of Matchbox toys. He made these flies to supply to Hardy, the famous fishing tackle retailer in London, in business since 1872. I purchased them directly from his family.
There are four framed flies, each sold individually. The grouping of four is shown in the last photo.
His family member told me that he personally presented one of his "Silver Jubilee" flies to the Queen Mother, who gratefully received it. She was a passionate fly fishing enthusiast.
These are relatively large flies, and beautifully made and coloured. There is a label on the front, and it is signed on the back by Riley and dated 1973.
Size-Frame size 3.75 inches wide by 3 5/8 inches high by 5/8 inches deep. Fly alone measures approximately 2.25 inches long by 1.75 inches high.
Weight for shipping-65 grams.
Reflections from the glass may cause colours to appear faded. They are actually brightly coloured.
A very attractive object for the fishing aficionado, which would make a lovely display or gift. Perfect for a study.
In very good condition and with an interesting provenance.
Please see listings for 3 additional complementary framed flies available from the same maker, sold separately. See last photo.
