Description
London 1935 stunning English hallmarked solid silver gilt snuff box of superb quality, and interesting provenance.
With the collectable jubilee hallmark celebrating the silver anniversary of the reign of King George V and Queen Mary, this presentation snuffbox with octagonal shape has outstanding all over engraving in the Georgian style with herringbone and dots encased by foliate bands. Made by Carrington and Co., excellent makers, the lid interior is inscribed "Presented by the Clothworkers Company, May 6, 1935."
The Clothworkers Company was established in 1528, and is one of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London, descended from medieval trade guilds, and still active today. Founded to support the textile and manufacturing industry in Great Britain, it now still supports the industry as one of the United Kingdom's largest charities.
This box must have been an award for some charitable works, and would be a superb collectable for someone with a textile connection, or for the collector of novely silver.
The weight is 110 grams. Superb craftsmanship, beautifully finished, with extremely clear hallmarks, and an interesting textile connection.
Size 3.25 inches long.
In excellent condition, with a very tight closure to lid.
