Description

Rare London 1798 English hallmarked solid silver asparagus tongs by Wilkes Booth, with beautifully shaped handles and very nice lion rampant family crest.
The earliest tongs like this one, were noted for their scissor type action, as opposed to the later more commonly found "U" shaped tongs. This hinge works perfectly after 213 years! Also, pre 1800 tongs also had ridged inner surfaces to improve gripping of the precious and delicate asparagus stalks. The lip at the end prevents the stalks rolling off when serving. A retention band separates and holds the two arms.
Size-9.5 inches long.
Weight-very heavy at 145 grams.
A very stylish and superb quality server. The hallmarks and family crest are clear.
They could be used to serve any food, chops, sandwiches, salads, etc., although their original purpose was for asparagus.
In very good condition, and in perfect working order, a rare example of 18th century asparagus tongs having great age and craftsmanship. All silver asparagus items are most desired and collectable.
These would make a wonderful gift to use or collect or a lovely treat for yourself.
