Description

Based on the swastika, the ancient 3000 year old symbol for good luck, prosperity and well being, used by many cultures, this 10 ct. gold thanks badge, with superimposed fleur-de-lis was designed by Robert Baden-Powell for the Boy Scouts. It was only used from 1914-1935.
In Europe this design was sometimes called the Hooked Cross or from Middle English, the Fylfot.
When the National Socialist Party in Germany adopted the swastika symbol (slightly changing the direction of the legs), worldwide protest forced the design of this merit medal to be changed, and it ceased to be used. Previous recipients could exchange their award for the new design, or could keep it and purchase the new one as well.
Therefore, this medal can be historically pinpointed to this brief period in history.
The thanks badge was given to express appreciation to those who were not members of the Boy Scout movement, but who had been of service to scouting.
.75 inches wide by .75 inches high, not including loop.
A historic badge in excellent condition.
