Description

19th century cast and silverplate dish stand in the guise of a dolphin among the waves and seaweed, holding a dish aloft, and designed with intricate detail. The dolphin is recognised as the representing life, love, protection and guidance, and has been a popular ornament on furniture, silver and other objects for centuries.
Although this example doesn't seem to be marked, the fine craftsmanship shows it must have come from a superior maker such as Elkington or Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co., who were known to make such items.
Victorians were known to embrace this fanciful and naturalistic type of design in both metals and other materials.
Both the stand and the original fitted etched glass dish are in very good condition.
Size approximately 5 inches wide by 5 inches high.
Weight-660 grams not including glass dish.
It is a wonderful dish for butter, caviar, sweetmeats etc., and makes an excellent talking point.
See cast shell salts, which are very compatible with this item.
